On April 30th, I visited the US Embassy in Dhaka to secure my visa for studying in the USA for my master’s program. I was admitted to Western Illinois University. My journey was not smooth because I lacked enough information about the process. Today, I’m going to share my experience on how I researched universities for my master’s degree.
Method-1
I had all the necessary documents, including my passport, recommendation letter, and others. Once I received my Duolingo results, I was finally ready to apply to universities. My CGPA was not very high; it was 2.93 out of 4.0. So, the first thing I did was search on Google for universities in the USA that accept low CGPAs. I then checked each university’s website from the search results. Every university provides its entry requirements on its website, so I visited each one to check their requirements. If you encounter difficulties, search again on Google for entry requirements for a master’s in Geography and Environment. This will help you find a direct link to the relevant page. Make sure to check the requirements thoroughly.
Method-2
If your bachelor’s degree CGPA is 3.0 or above, your HSC score is 3.5 or above, and your IELTS score is 6.5 or higher, then search on Google for top-ranked universities in the USA. If you already have a preferred state, such as New York, Michigan, Washington, California, Florida, or others, you can search by that state.
Next, open a blank Excel sheet. Create headings including University, State, CGPA, IELTS Score, and other columns you need. Check the universities one by one and note them down according to your priorities and profile. Make a shortlist and apply to 3 to 5 universities based on my recommendation.
Method-3
There are some websites on the internet where you can find universities based on your profile. Generally, you have to visit these websites, create an account, and then search by your interests. You can find this type of website by searching on Google. It is helpful when you are looking for universities that meet your requirements. You can see the minimum entry requirements on these websites, such as IELTS scores, required GPA, and whether other language proficiencies are accepted. I used US News & World Report and MastersPortal for myself; you can also try them.

Method-4
